October 2019 – National Window Covering Safety Month

October is National Window Covering Safety Month.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission calls corded window coverings one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. The Blinds Man has selected premium window fashions brands to bring you products that are safe for you, your family and your pets.

CPSC Acting Chairman, Ann Marie Buerkle has said “CPSC is pleased to join with the window covering industry as well as safety advocates in reminding parents and caregivers to use only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Cordless window coverings are widely available for sale today and we encourage parents  and caregivers to look at the shades and blinds in their homes for accessible cords on the front, side and back, and replace corded products with cordless window coverings products.”

When shopping for window coverings and fashions, look for the Best for Kids™ certification label to easily identify window covering products best suited for homes with young children.

Safety Guidelines

  • Install only cordless window coverings in bedrooms and areas for young children.
  • Position cribs, beds, playpens and other furniture away from windows.
  • Ensure tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall.
  • Replace blinds, shades, and drapes manufactured before 2001 with products that meet updated safety standards.
  • If replacement not possible, repair window blinds, corded shades and draperies manufactured before 2001 with retrofit cord kits.

The Blinds Man is here to help you with all your window needs. If you have questions about window covering safety, stop by 468 Southland Drive Lexington, Kentucky or give us a call (859) 260-1551.

October is National Window Coverings Safety Month

October is National Window Coverings Safety Month. The Blinds Man’s top priority is your family’s safety with our window treatments and/or window fashions. We strive to provide our clients with all the information they need in order to make an informed decision as to which window treatments you use in your home.

“The new Best for Kids™ certification program recently launched by the window covering industry will assist in educating consumers about potential window-cord hazards facing young children and will aid consumers in making the right choice when selecting window coverings. In order to be eligible for this certification, manufacturers must meet the specific program criteria and submit their window covering products to a designated third party testing laboratory. Once products pass testing they may be labeled ‘Best for Kids.’” – Window Covering Safety Council, https://windowcoverings.org/best-for-kids/

You are able to tell which window coverings are certified as Best for Kids™, you will see the following logo:

We had previously mentioned that the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have created this new standard to help with cutting down on the hazards of window coverings with children and pets in homes. The standard requires that all manufacturers, distributors, or sellers can only stock cordless or inaccessible cord window coverings. You will not be able to get stock corded blinds at big box retailers. If you require or need corded window coverings, businesses like the Blinds Man can help you with your customized window coverings.

The Blinds Man can help you with selecting the window covering that is right for you and your family. We have a wide range of products to select to meet your needs and your style.

Where did the corded blinds go?

Have you noticed that it is hard to find corded blinds lately?

If you are in the market for window treatments for your home or business, you will have a hard time finding stock corded window treatments from retailers because of safety standards in place. Stock window treatments cannot have cords.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have a new standard to help with eliminating the strangulation hazard with corded window coverings. All manufacturers, distributors, or sellers can only stock cordless or inaccessible cord window coverings. If you need cord window coverings, you will have to custom-order your window coverings from businesses like the Blinds Man.

If you need corded window coverings, you will have to custom-order your window coverings

The Blinds Man is here to help! We are able to custom-order your window coverings to meet your needs. The Blinds Man works with you with every step of the process. Providing you with important details about your window coverings, measuring and installing your custom-order coverings. For whatever reason you need corded window coverings, the Blinds Man has you covered!

“The revised safety standard segments the market between stock and custom-made products because U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commison (CPSC) incident data shows that requiring stock products be cordless or have inaccessible cords would have the most significant and immediate impact on reducing the strangulation risk to young children from certain window covering cords,” said WCMA Executive Director, Ralph Vasami.1

It’s all about the you children.

Children are our future. We have to protect them as much as we possibly can. With these new safety standards, we can ensure that we are protecting all children from strangulation hazards in the home.  “Almost 17,000 children under age 6 were treated for injuries from window blinds in U.S. emergency departments from 1990-2015, researchers report online December 11 in Pediatrics. That translate to an injury rate of almost 3 our of every 100,000 kids.”2

The WCMA also has launched the “Best for Kids” certification. The WCMA created the “Best for Kids” certification program in 2015 to make it easier for consumers shopping for window coverings to identify cordless products.  When you are shopping for stock window coverings, be sure to look for the “Best for Kids” certification symbol.3
